  • October 31, 2001 Addressing the Aggression: Religious Recruiting on Campus, By Melissa Chacko, The Strand, University of Toronto and Victoria College, Toronto, Ontario (...Although the University protects all student groups, if their activities are in violation of its policies, legal action can be taken. "The behaviour that people find intimidating, threatening and definitely unwanted, the behaviour that is persistent when students indicate that they are not interested...harassing unwanted persistency... that behaviour is subject to sanction at the University of Toronto," says Addario. Individuals who harass or threaten others can be charged under the Student Code of Conduct, the Trespass to Property Act, and/or the Criminal Code of Canada…

Harassment from the organization can be averted by stating clearly that no further contact with the organization will be welcome, and that any such contact will be viewed as harassment and charges will be pressed. Going to that extreme is difficult for some students, but it remains an effective way of deflecting these persistent organizations. Students who face harassment can also contact Campus Police who will take action warranted by the situation.

One key element to helping students get out of aggressive religious organizations is reuniting them with family and old friends, and getting them to join other non-aggressive organizations where they can make new friends...)
